Product Description
This guitar could conveniently grab any one of the headline titles that guitar players and collectors discover on the internet or on vintage guitar websites – “One Of A Kind” The Holy Grail of Guitars” “The Ultimate Find” “The Real Deal”.
Our 1960 Gibson Les Paul Custom ticks all of these options and yet will still draw the wow factor when you set eyes upon her! We’d describe it as our most exclusive, original and exciting vintage guitar we’ve seen in our 20 year history of guitar trading. This is a completely original and stunning condition Les Paul Custom from 1960 complete with original hardcase, all original parts, swing tags, period brochures and a signed, framed picture of Les Paul and Mary Ford. This guitar has never been in the possession of another guitar dealer or trader and is offered for sale for the first time. What is astonishing on this Gibson is the condition of the paintwork with virtually no front lacquer cracking or ageing at all. Even most of the gold hardware is only lightly worn including the original factory fitted Bigsby tremolo. This is the same model that Jimmy Page used for much of his session work in the 60s and later had stolen during touring with Led Zeppelin.
Naturally all the desirable features for a 1960 Les Paul Custom are present including three PAF pickups with correct labels and markings, super slim 60s profile neck with ‘Fretless Wonder’ narrow profile fretwork, Tunematic bridge with Bigsby trem, metal top bonnet control knobs and original pots (astonishingly, without a hint of crackle after 45 years!) 5 latch case with golden interior (protected during it’s life in a special case cover and whilst the cover is included in the sale and has seen much better days it has meant even the case is in excellent condition), correct UK export ‘Made In The USA’ stamp above inked serial number. Everything checks out on this piece, no mods, no upgrades, no changes, no excuses. We have painstakingly verified every part.
Originality is essential for collectability but how does this beauty perform? We forsook one piece of originality on this 1960 Les Paul Custom - the 45 year old –strings – and restrung her with brand new 10s. Once you’ve heard this guitar it makes perfect sense why some guitar legends still command premium prices. From a relatively hot bridge pickup (10.5K) to a sweet warm neck pickup, drive or clean she performs unlike any re-issue can. Switch in the Custom’s centre pickup and you can get the classic thin out-of-phase in the centre position or combine with the bridge for drive with clarity unlike any other Les Paul we’ve heard. A stunning guitar to collect and play. With the previous record of 50s and 60s Gibson instruments it will appreciate in value too.
"So for people looking to start collecting, your safest bet is to head for the mainstream and think about playing the long game. For Example, 1959 Les Paul Standards were fetching £200,000 all day long three years ago. Now you can get one for £120,000. That's a hell of a discount. And the thing is that in the next three years it'll go back to that price and kick on from there. If I had £100,000 in cash I'd spend it all on guitars and look for them to be worth £150,000 in three years. If that wasn't the case, then I'm Rudolph Nureyev." - Phil Harris, Guitar and Bass Magazine, January 2011 Vol 22
We couldn't agree more, this is a once in a life time opportunity. Rest assured, we have meticulously examined this Les Paul to confirm its originality.
An absolute steal at £69,999.00
