Taylor 514ceTaylor 514ce, ES2

Mahogany yields its inspiring tone readily, with a strong, breathy midrange and a fundamental focus. A cedar top imparts extra warmth to complement that voice and slightly lowers the overall volume ceiling compared to a denser spruce or mahogany top. The cutaway 514ce is a perennial favorite with singer-songwriters and light-to-medium strummers for its blend of warmth and compression, and Taylor’s Expression System® 2 pickup delivers superb amplified tone. The neo-vintage appointment package includes an grained ivoroid rosette, grained ivoroid binding, and a Century fretboard inlay.

What to expect from a 500 Series Taylor Guitar?

The first of Taylor’s all-solid guitars to come completely Gloss as standard. The 500 Series has an expansive range of options to choose from. On offer are almost all of Taylor’s body shapes, 12-string models, 12th fret models  and Nylon models. Many models are also available with the option of a Tropical Mahogany Top, a Sitka Spruce top or a Cedar Top. All 500 Series instruments come with Tropical Mahogany back and sides. The 500 series also sees the introduction of the brand new Taylor Expression System 2, designed to reproduce the natural sound of a guitar more accurately.

Grand Auditorium

In the context of Taylor’s modern design heritage, the Grand Auditorium is Taylor’s flagship body style and the most popular shape. The next size up from the Grand Concert, it actually shares the same basic body dimensions as a Dreadnaught, but with modified contours that include a more tapered waist, enabling the guitar to fit more comfortably in your lap. Tonally, it lives in the sweet spot between a Dreadnaught – known for robust flatpicking and rhythmic strumming – and a Grand concert – designed with finger stylists in mind – to give players the best if both worlds and then some. The GA’s well-defined midrange helps maintain the balance and clarity of the GC, yet enough power on the top and bottom for strummers and flatpickers to let loose. It’s the most versatile performer and a smart choice for the gigging musician looking for one guitar to cover a diverse mix of music. Whether  you’re a novice, weekend warrior, or a professional and want a guitar that can cover a lot of ground, you cant go wrong with the Grand Auditorium.

Playing Profile

  • Tonal balance and versatility
  • Good for fingerstyle and light/medium strumming and picking
  • Records and mixes well with other instruments

Taylor Expression System 2

Taylor pickup designer David Hosler had been studying under-saddle piezo transducers and how they capture a guitar’s energy as it is transferred from the strings through the saddle and soundboard. The industry’s prevailing understanding had been that the top and string vibration cause the saddle to “bounce” up and down. This has long been the basis for the placement of a piezo- electric transducer under the saddle. But Hosler found that the vertical movement is heavily restricted because the string tension’s downward pressure essentially locks the saddle down. That’s why a traditional under-saddle pickup with piezo-electric crystals often responds with a sound often characterized as thin, brittle or synthetic. In reality, the saddle’s natural range of movement is back and forth like a pendulum. That revelation led Hosler to relocate the piezo crystals from under the saddle to behind it, just barely making contact with it. The new positioning enables the crystals to respond more naturally to the guitar’s energy as it was transferred through the saddle. The patent-pending ES2 design incorporates three pickup sensors that are installed behind the saddle, through the bridge, with three tiny Allen screws that calibrate the pressure of the sensors against the saddle.
